Schooner “Passing Cloud”

Comfort, Safety, and Sailing Ability

Passing Cloud is a 70′ classic wooden staysail schooner designed by William James Roué, famous for designing the legendary schooner Bluenose. Launched in Victoria, BC, in 1974, Passing Cloud has a rich history on the BC coast, renowned for her elegant design, exceptional accommodation, robust construction, and remarkable sailing abilities.

Designed to sail around the world, Passing Cloud is an ideal vessel for wildlife and cultural expeditions throughout the BC Coast. Passing Cloud is a Transport Canada certified passenger vessel and meets the highest standards of safety and construction. She is fully equipped with modern safety and navigation equipment including radar, GPS, VHF radios, EPIRB, and digital chart plotter and satellite telephone.

Among her many features are Passing Cloud’s three private staterooms, gorgeous main salon, traditional wheelhouse, generous deck space, and exceptional sailing abilities.

Brightwork Interior and Private Guest Accommodation

Passing Cloud’s interior exudes warmth, character, and maritime heritage. She is exceptionally comfortable and guests frequently describe her interior as “stunning”. Her classic west coast-style wheelhouse is one of Passing Cloud’s finest features. At the helm polished brass and bright work abound, and her traditional galley and settee provide the perfect combination of comfort and visibility for luxury wildlife viewing.

Passing Cloud’s main salon is her centerpiece below deck. Robust overhead beams support a massive skylight through which natural light suffuses this space and illuminates her varnished old growth Douglas fir cabin sole. Two large settees provide spacious seating for reading or socializing around her luxurious dining table. The surrounding shelves are the home to the extensive cultural and natural history, marine science, and maritime libraries. Finally, a cast iron oil-burning heater radiates an embracing warmth throughout the entire vessel.

Guest accommodation is in three private staterooms. Each stateroom has two spacious single berths complete with fluffy duvets, a private vanity with sink, mirror, and hot and cold running water, a skylight or deck prism, brass reading lamps, and drawers and a hanging locker for personal effects. The spacious head and shower is accessed from the main salon.

Our professional and passionate crew specialize and take great pride in weaving together unique, authentic, fun, adventurous, informative, and luxurious expeditions that are tailored to the interests and ambitions of our guests. Our highly trained, certified, and experienced captains are also our expedition leaders. Our mates are actively involved in all aspects of on board operations, including sailing, navigation, guiding, galley, and guest services. Our chefs are typically culinary school trained and oversee all aspects of our food services, from provisioning in the remote communities we visit, to providing exceptional meals that feature local and seasonal produce, fish, meats, and poultry. Finally, our visiting on-board experts are passionate experts with diverse backgrounds in marine biology and ecology, fisheries, archaeology, anthropology, ethnobotany, geology, marine mammal research, and more.
